Codi is Loyd are very much the same. To start with, they are both actively looking for were they can belong. Like on page 122 Loyd says he’d die for the land, witch in his words mean he would die for a place for him to call home. And we know Codi wants a place too. The whole point of the book is about her finding herself. She says “I want a place to want me to want them.” Secondly, they both care for Grace, the only differences is Codi isn’t so bluntly about it. For example, Codi is working hard to save the river of Grace, and without that, Grace goes too. She is making peacock piƱatas and is in the club. Loyd is always talking and talking about his people who lived Grace. He talks about the Pueblos and there history, rituals, and random facts. I’m sure he would be very sad to see grace go. Also, Codi and Loyd both have the same sense of humor, teasing and being sarcastic mostly. Like Loyd talking about the prehistoric condos. And because the building was so small Codi jokes“they didn’t eat there wonder bread.” Another thing, both of them have had lose, for Codi it was her mother, and for Loyd it was his twin brother. They both talk about this together on page 191. Lastly, they have conceived a child together; she explains all of this in detail on chapter 6, the Miracle.
Differences between Codi and Loyd also have many. For instance Loyd has family and Codi does not. She even admits this saying “I’ve always thought Loyd as an orphan like me, but he has always been surrounded by family.” Another difference is Codi likes animals unlike Loyd. It’s a known fact that Loyd cockfights, and will stop, but not for the animals sake, but because of his mother and Codi. Codi on the other hand is sympathetic towards animals. She once saved coyote pups from death in chapter The Flood. She also cries for the chickens in cockfighting and tells Loyd to stop.
