Bollywood

In many ways, Bollywood and Hollywood have many similarities between each but some cases can be very different. Bollywood culture is primarily Hindu culture and Hollywood’s culture is more American. But when The Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty and American actor Richard Gere made a culture clash, problems between the two arose. In Hollywood’s culture public displays of affection is very ok or even encouraged. When Hollywood stars like Gere, show public displays of affection its fine and people love it. But in Bollywood culture, when actresses like Shilpa Shetty publicly kiss or something when the whole world can see, this is not accepted. In India, many people suffer from HIV so they held an Aids awareness rally. The two actors showed up at the event to talk about safe sex. Gere said “no condom no sex” and then kissed Shetty on the cheek. The crowd and the country did not approve. To make matters worse, the two were an unmarried couple AND Gere was a foreigner. People did not like he was not from their country. This is very not OK in their culture. In following protests began. Protesters burned movie posters of Shetty. The incident is one of few culture clashes. What is OK for one culture is not in another. Gere should have respected their culture, but I’m sure he did not know. In my opinion, I think that he was just making a joke that got way too out of hand.
